EDU: Controlling the winds of summer

Courtney Read Hoffman is an Austin lobbyist working for the camping industry. Tonight we have an important (to us as a business) announcement from her . . .

Great news tonight!!!! The Senate took up HB 2 and voted 20–10 in favor of Sen. Lucio’s amendment to start school the first Tuesday after Labor Day and end no later than June 7. This language is identical to the House version and is effective for the 2006-07 school year. Sen. Shapiro, education committee chair, stated that she opposed the amendment but left the door open for senators to vote as they wished. HB 2 passed to third reading and should be voted out of the Senate tomorrow. Assuming that occurs, we will focus on the Governor’s office to ensure that the bill gets his blessing.
