ENV: Kerr and Real Counties, 11 May 2005

i did a program tonight at Laity Lodge, and since the spot is on the
headwaters of the Frio River i asked Chris Anderson, a UCLA doctoral
candidate here working with Hetaerina to go along. it's a good thing -- he's
responsible for netting three new county records (in Real County -- Great
Spreadwing, Orange Bluet and Dot-winged Baskettail)! we didn't net what
would have been another county record (Blue-fronted Dancer), and despite
much effort i was unable to net a Comanche Skimmer (still several days
early, which i missed last week as well).

we also picked up a couple of interesting Argias. they looked like
Springwater Dancers (A. plana) at first glance. but they were small, had
dark amber wings, and had some abdominal markings intermediate between A.
and A. nahuana (both of which were also present at this site). I
suspect these might be an early season form of A. plana? if they've been
around a while, perhaps that accounts for the amber wings. i'll look at
genitalia tomorrow -- too tired now to hold anything still.

[Update: well, i'm not familiar enough to ID those Argias. They'll be off to John Aboott. I believe they're in the Argia plana/munda/vivida complex but they were quite different from several of the obvious A. plana types present, even though i suspect that's all they are.
