ENV: Not-Really-a-Cat-Friday

A couple of weeks ago i posted a series of pictures of Eastern Dobsonfly females that i found over the course of a few days here. In researching a bit of text to add to the pics i found out that the larva, known as Hellgrammites, leave the water and pupate underground before emerging as adults the next spring/summer. While our kids here catch a number of Hellgrammites from the river, i personally had never seen one out of water until today -- so i'm posting again with pictures of this pre-pupal individual.

I was out gathering specimens of Argia for Ryan Caesar who is working with DNA in the genus via Ohio State University when i found this critter. So i brought it home for photos and then released it.

Be sure to check out the rest of the Friday Ark at The Modulator

prob. Eastern Dobsonfly, Corydalus cf. cornutus
