ENV: Observations

Well, we had some rain overnight, and today it's overcast and misty, though not cold. I used a black light overnight, and thanks probably to the little rain earlier in the week and last night's rain plus the mild temp i had a really interesting crop of moths this morning -- about 40 total, almost all different species, including an Obscure Sphinx (that's about number four here), and a host of very strange beetles -- ones i don't believe i've seen before -- that kept their wings partly flared and were obviously doing some pheromonal tricks. Pictures later.

Update: More on the beetles. Today walking back to the cabin i noticed dozens of bugs on the gym floor -- they were the same beetle, all on their backs but alive. When i turned a few over they immediately flipped back upside down. What's that? Perhaps insecticide? Around here, who knows. I'll expound more later tonight in a post about behavior about the numbers of this thing without me having noticed it before.

Update: I switched from solo blacklight to blacklight and halogen after midnight and got fewer moths and many more other things, notably tiny mayflies.
