ENV: Not-Really-a-Cat-Friday

Be sure to check out The Friday Ark at The Modulator.

A couple of things happened on the way to this post today.

First i travelled the back road last night and noticed that Bear Creek Ranch has apparently sold or otherwise gotten rid of their herd of Grevy's Zebras (Equus grevyi). That's a shame -- at least from here -- i really liked watching those guys. Zebras are among my favorite animals, and Grevy's is the handsomest of the three species (or myriad subspecies). That regular adrenaline-jump when i travel the backroads to town will be sorely missed.

The common area zebra is Grant's (Equus burchelli boehmi). It is the commonest taxon on home turf as well with numbers estimated to be between 150,000 and 200,000 remaining in the wild. There are a couple of sizable herds in the county. This was the second critter that came to mind today. Stevie Cullinan wrote me today and i remembered the last time i saw him was three summers ago when i had Fosheezie. I took pictures of him bottle-bucket feeding him.

Two other zebras have been known in the county in my time here. Whiskey Canyon Ranch, known for its equids -- both cutting horses and critically endangered wild equids -- had a small herd of Hartmann's Mountain Zebras (Equus zebra hartmannae). I took pictures of those in 2000 while researching on article on the effects of Equine Infectious Anemia (colloquially known as EIA or Swamp Fever) on wild equid species. Unfortunately, they were not digital pics, and the scanned prints are not great. Whiskey Canyon also had a few Grevy's Zebras and a breeding reserve herd of Przewalski's Horses (Equus przewalksii), but i know those to have been now moved. No idea on the current status of the Mountain Zebras.

The other taxon that has had a small presence in the county is Damara or Chapman's Zebra (Equus burchelli antiquorum), of which i've seen only a couple of singles on different ranches.

Here's a few pics . . .
