ATH: U.S. Soccer team better everyday

From the US National Team Players Association

U.S. Survives Winter Wonderland
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany (March 1, 2006) AP -- The U.S. team wasn't counting on a blizzard in its World Cup tuneup game Wednesday night.

In a scene more befitting Lambeau Field than a soccer field, Clint Dempsey scored the only goal off a misplay by Poland's goalie, and the American survived the elements in a 1-0 victory. The next time the United States plays at Fritz-Walter-Stadion, it will probably be 50 degrees warmer, with no sign of snow and a frosty wind.

The U.S. has begun 2006 in solid form, going 4-0-1 and netting 12 goals while surrendering only two. After drawing with Canada on Jan. 22 in San Diego, the U.S. has produced four straight comprehensive wins against Norway, Japan (another FIFA World Cup finalist), Guatemala, and now Poland, including three by shutout.

Against Poland, the United States has an all-time record of 6-7-2 in 14 meetings. The teams met once before on neutral soil, a 3-1 victory for Poland in the teams final Group D match at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Daejeon, Korea Republic.

The USA was drawn into Group E for the 2006 FIFA World Cup along with the Czech Republic, Italy and Ghana. The U.S. plays their opening match against the Czechs on June 12 in Gelsenkirchen before meeting Italy and then finishing off group play against Ghana on June 22 in Nuremberg. The U.S. has chosen the northern port city of Hamburg as their base of operations throughout the tournament.
