Went to San Antonio yesterday to get Holly and Roy at the airport. They've been in Santa Fe enjoying snow! On the way i stopped for mail and then perused books at Borders and B&N before waiting for their flight. The stops produced some gem books.

In my mail was John Abbott's Odonata Survey of Texas which (disclaimer: i authored a chapter in it) is a remarkable piece of work. He plans to make this an annual publication, and if this volume is any indication this will become a model for other states to aspire to. Congrats on a magnificent piece of work John.

And Tim Brush's opus on birds of the Lower Rio Grande Valley was on the store shelves. Nesting Birds of a Tropical Frontier is available from Texas A&M Press. It should be a nice companion to another book due out soon on recollections of birding in the valley (disclaimer two: i also contributed a chapter to that one). More news when that one becomes available.

It's not a pool -- we're poor -- but Sancho put together a group of us Little Appalachia folks to make March Madness picks. I went overboard on the underdogs, and it looks like it's already costing me. Anyway, the brackets are here.

David Ng wrote to alert me to Reviews coming soon for several films i've just been able to get a look at, including Crash, Brokeback Mountain, TransAmerica, Munich and Tarnation.
