Jonathon Perry named West Texas MVP

If Jonathon Perry continues on his present course, he will have to build a new trophy case by the time he graduates.

The Tivy sophomore recently was named as the only sophomore on the All-Region IV basketball team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. He previously was selected to the District 27-4A first team.

This past week the 6-foot-4-inch guard added another honor to the list. Not only did The San Angelo Standard Times name Perry to its All-West Texas Boys Super Team, they tabbed him as the Most Valuable Player in Classes 3A-5A.

“This is quite an honor for Jonathon,” said Antler head coach Brian Young. “He worked hard for all his accolades and achievements. He did not just show up at the gym and get by on his talent. He put in the necessary hours.”

Perry’s emergence was a key factor in Tivy’s success this past season, as he averaged 17.8 points per game and pulled down an average of 6.2 rebounds per outing. The Antlers finished with a record of 26-6 and placed second in District 27-4A.

Besides his work ethic, Young said he feels there is another reason for Perry’s success.

“He loves the game of basketball,” the coach said. “He is a good kid and a good person. It is great to see good things happen to great people.”

With Perry returning for two more seasons, there could be quite a bit of greatness to come in the Antler’s future.
