UCLA escapes Texas A&M upset

Bruins now face the winner of No. 12 W. Kentucky and No. 13 San Diego news services, updated 17 minutes ago

ANAHEIM, Calif. - UCLA escaped the West Region upset bug, but only barely.

Darren Collison scored on a layup with 9.5 seconds remaining to lift the top-seeded Bruins to a 53-49 victory over No. 9-seed Texas A&M on Saturday.

After a missed shot by Texas A&M, UCLA's Russell Westbrook ran the length of the floor for a final uncontested dunk at the buzzer.

UCLA will face the winner of today's game between two surprises, No. 12 seed Western Kentucky and and No. 13 San Diego.

Collison and Kevin Love led the Bruins with 19 points each.

A loss by UCLA wouldn't have been surprising in the wild West. Earlier Saturday, No. 2 Duke lost to West Virginia. On Friday, No. 4 Connecticut and No. 5 Drake lost. After the No. 1 Bruins and No. 3 Xavier, the highest seed standing is No. 7 West Virginia.
