OBT: Gary Waggerman from AAS

Gary Lee Waggerman

Gary Lee Waggerman of Austin, Texas, died Thursday 7th of May, 2009 at the age of 67 years. He died after a 3 year battle with cancer at the St. David's South Austin Hospital. Gary Waggerman was born February 1, 1942 in Garber, Garfield County, Oklahoma. He graduated from Oklahoma State University, BS 1965 MS 1968. He then served in the Army at Arlington Hall Station a unit of Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. After 35 years with Texas Parks and Wildlife as a wildlife conservationist, he retired. In his retirement, he was active with Travis County Audubon Society. He led birding events throughout Texas, Oklahoma and parts of Mexico. Throughout his career and retirement he was active in aiding the recovery of the Whitewinged dove populations that once waned to a level that threatened their existence in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. He managed fourteen Las Palomas units managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife. His interest in this bird led to others referring to him as "Mr. Whitewing." He was predeceased by his parents Kenneth Allison Waggerman and Elsie Florence Tunis Waggerman of Garber Oklahoma. He leaves his wife of 43 years, Katherine "Kathy" Waggerman and his son Carl Waggerman both of Austin, Texas, and his brother Larry Waggerman and sister-in- law Cecilia Waggerman of Merced, California. At a future undecided date, his ashes will be honored with a ceremony in The Valley Nature Center located in Weslaco, Texas.
